設計をする時　古民家の中に立つと、
いろんな物語が聞こえてきます。
風の通り道、光の当たり具合から
ここがいつも家族が集まっていた場所かな？とか。
壁の煤け具合から、ここにキッチンがあったのだな。
寒かっただろうなあ、とか。
表から裏まで子供が遊び、駆け抜けた通り土間。
そのまま茶の間に上がり込んで、よその子も夕飯食べていってたよ、とか。

建築家だからこそ知る、その家の物語

Before I begin remodeling an old house, I like to stand inside it and listen to it's many stories.
Judging by the way the wind passes through a room - or the way the sunlight enters it, I wonder: is this where the family always gathered?
Observing the soot on the walls, I know this had to be the kitchen.
It must have been cold in the winter!
And this interior passageway with it's earthen floor was where neighborhood children used to play and run from front to back.
And here is where they would remove their shoes when they arrived home to dinner.
Such are the stories only an architect can know.

町の人と朝夕の挨拶を交わし
川に足を浸し　
下駄の音に耳を傾ける
町を歩き　
お茶を焙じる香りを嗅ぎ
夕焼けに染まる川を見ながら
この川で獲れた鮎や　
この川の水で作られたビールを飲む
四季の移ろいや、自然と共にある、その町の物語

Exchange greetings with the townspeople in the morning and evening. Cool your feet in the river. Listen to the sound of wooden sandals. Stroll through town. Smell the aroma of roasted tea. Watch the river become tinted by the setting sun, while eating sweetfish caught in the same river, or enjoying a craft beer made from the pristine local springwater. Experience the changing seasons in this town that coexists harmoniously with nature.
